Personal income tax is one of the most common questions individuals ask in Jordan: how much do I owe, which exemptions apply, and how is the final figure reached? This guide breaks down the framework under the Jordanian Income Tax Law in plain terms.
Who is subject to the tax?
Resident individuals are taxed on their income and benefit from personal and family exemptions. Non-residents are taxed on their Jordan-sourced income and are not granted the personal and family exemptions given to residents, except in specific cases under the law and instructions. In general, exemptions are granted on the basis of residency and documentation.
Personal and family exemptions
The law grants a personal exemption to the taxpayer and a further exemption for the family/dependents: a resident individual taxpayer receives an annual exemption of JOD 9,000, plus a further JOD 9,000 for dependents — in addition to documented additional exemptions (such as medical, education, rent, or housing-loan interest) up to a defined ceiling of JOD 5,000 for the taxpayer and dependents, in accordance with the law.
Progressive tax brackets
Jordan applies a progressive rate structure: the first slices of taxable income are taxed at lower rates that rise gradually. This means your average (effective) rate is always lower than the top bracket your income reaches, because each slice is taxed at its own rate.
The national contribution
On top of income tax, a national contribution of 1% applies to the portion of taxable income above the legally defined threshold. It is calculated separately and added to the income-tax figure to reach the total due.
